Research

I am primarily a qualitative researcher with a background in demography. My projects focus on race, ethnicity, migration, and emotion. I am interested in how people traverse the ruptures created by migration through their efforts to imagine their future and to make sense of the past. I ask how emotions mediate these understandings of self and other. I am currently working on the following projects:

Identity and Connection in the Chinese Diaspora
A project about the Chinese Diaspora in the US: where do Chinese Americans find belonging, how do they connect with the past, and what is the role of emotions in re(producing) ethnoracial identities? Based on interviews and participant observation. Data collection for this project is closed, but Please contact me for more information.

Imagined Futures in Temporary Migration
An interview-based project with a card-sorting component set in three migrant-sending communities in South Asia, designed and conducted as part of the REALM project on temporary labor migration to the GCC, and in collaboration with the CDS, IPS, and graduates of Mizoram University. Data collection for this project is complete. Learn more here
